MAJOR MAC

15/04/2025

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Emil DiVago's fifth novel, 'Major Mac'. This book tells the story of Daniel McLaughlin, fourth son of Patrick and Theresa McLaughlin who left behind the hardship and depression suffered in Inishowen, Co. Donegal during the great famine of 1847. They boarded the sailing ship 'Erin' in Moville harbour, emigrated to New York and soon became successful cereal farmers in Massachusetts, supplying barley and rye to the local brewery and distillery. Daniel qualified to enter the prestigious cadet academy of West Point to become an Officer in the United States Army. His rapid promotion in rank was equalled by his similar rise in popularity and fame. His unrequited love ambition as a young man resulted in several sexual encounters, both before and after meeting his 'true love'.

He discovered that the risk involved in fighting Indians was no less hazardous than that fighting the corruption, rampant within his military superiors. After experiencing several personal tragedies, he eventually managed to return to Ireland, to his parents' townland in Inishowen, where he might learn the truth of what happened over a quarter century ago.

What he did learn, however, was just how many cousins of the McLaughlin and Doherty clan he never knew he had; he learned how to cut and foot turf; how to net a salmon illegally and drink copious amounts of the 'black stuff', followed by 'a drop of the crater'; either one of which proved to be an efficient aphrodisiac!

Fame and fortune awaited him on his return to the States; he was to become the most prolific figure throughout the Eastern seaboard; women yearned for to see him, just to get a glimpse of .............. Major Mac
